Cameras on every corner

Hey guys,
Look up. Ever noticed camera on every corner. Her in Virginia Beach, VA ther are cameras everywhere. Even in some neighborhoods> Who is watching us, and why. Search "Digital Angel". Care to have a chip implanted in you. One nut behind a computer rulling the world? Sci-Fi of a reality comming true?

We have them on all major intersections, paid for by federal grants. A motion to use them for traffic citation purposes, busting red lights, was recently voted down, but the fact they could capture the license plate and driver's face tells you the resolution cabilities. The county now has a web site that allows you see them all in video mode to 'check traffic conditions'. Since the fed paid for them, who knows how many strings are attached. I'm with wabiker in that they'll eventually (or now) be used by the Gestapo under the guise of 'protecting our security'. The capability is there to instantly run every license plate and/or face that goes through any major intersection through the national database. If ctfuzzy sees this post he can probably tell us what platform they use. But he might have to have his redneck girlfriend kill us if he does that.

I recently got a ticket in the mail, from one of those "cameras".
They even sent a print out and picture.
I could of swore I beat that light.

You probably did, but your chance of proving yourself innocent (heyt, isn't that backwards) is exactly zero.

Thus the reason that the legality of photo radar and traffic light tickets are on their way to the Supreme Court of Canada.

We have this new constitution called the Patriot Act. Anything that might be questioned about civil rights can be carefully tucked into that text under 'The War on Terrorism'. Our supreme court is far too busy with important matters to consider everyday stuff like our freedom that Ashcroft already has covered.

There was a lot of stink being raised about those cameras in Northern VA (Fairfax County). Some of those cameras are used to ensure public safety - at least that's the official claim. A study was done that showed the cameras were money making machines because all those people who ran red lights got tickets without needing an officer friendly there to write it. The study also showed that there was a 40%-50% reduction in the yellow light time after the cameras went in (guess why). As a result, more tickets were written and also, rear end collisions are up. One of the more interesting things was that Lockheed, who made the camera systems, got a cut of the ticket. I want to say that their take was about $60 or so, but my memory may be off on the exact number. Whatever it was, I was shocked at how much they got.

I notice that there are a lot of cameras that don't necessarily watch the traffic. Can't imagine exactly what they're for. Never heard of one solving or preventing a crime. Nonetheless, they're popping up everywhere.

Also, next time you walk into a store, notice the globes hanging from the ceiling. They're all over. Guess what's inside.

Smile and say cheese and make sure you got your nice clothes on. Your picture is being taken just about everywhere you go.

I like the cameras and hope they put them everywhere. Public means public. If you don't want it photographed, do it at home.
You have no reasonable expectation of privacy the minute you walk out your door. They're much more of a problem for the crooks than me.

That is EXACTLY what they want you think, and in most cases TELL you to think.

sinjin, I'm shocked!

We're at opposite ends on this one.

Without the cameras, we wouldn't be privy to such action scenes as this.

What exactly do you fear them catching you doing?

I used to think they were a cause for concern until I saw the ones in London being used to round up thugs who's pastime it was to run past strollers and coldcock them on the way by.
Nice boys those.

Surveillance doesn't bother me, unreasonable searches and seizures do though.

Where does one stop and the other start?

Your tactics are exactly those used by every politician and lobbyist in everything from gun control to the environment.

Put the person on the defensive in a matter that makes them out to be the bad guy. You don't like A? Well then, you MUST be B. Shame on you for being B.

If you're not doing anything wrong, what do you have to fear?

That question could not be more irrelevent and insidious IMHO. I find it infuriating.

You can justify implanting microchips into someone's brain using that logic. Is that OK with you?

It's currently illegal to tap a person' phone conversation without a court order. Why should walking down the street be any different. Or should the government (or some private citizen) be able to monitor all your phone calls because you have nothing to hide?

It comes down to the erosion of people's rights and freedoms.

alanscott,

I'm amazed that someone as conservative as yourself would support such a "liberal" enterprise. What if they were after your guns? Why not just register them? What have you got to hide? You don't plan on doing anything illegal do you? It might help us catch a criminal though if you just tell us everything about the firearms you own for our records here. Don't worry though, we're only after the bad guys.

It's a slippery slope gentlemen.
