Good question. I have always made it a habit to do an underhood inspection at each gas fill (once a week), unless I am on a long trip stopping every 300 miles with the V10 gas pig.
I check oil, look for leaks, check battery and cable condition, inspect the serpentine belt (should carry a spare), and anything that looks out of the ordinary. This has helped me catch tons of stuff before it got out of hand. And since I drive a high mileage vehicle I consider it the minimum check. At least once a month I take a close look at the trucks drivetrain axle to axle. Visual inspections on everything from brakes to seals.
If you pay a little attention to your truck it will last as long as you want it to.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jan-03 AT 06:40 PM (EST)]With 80k on the beast I check the oil once a week, while in there a general inspection of serpentine belt, blinker fluid, washer fluid, and radiator fluids. I also like to count how many spark plugs are left!
Really just once a week, oil and general inspection.
Come on Forty terds on the battery?
Are you sure they weren't left by the banjo players?
the turds that is..............
Check mine about every 2 weeks. I always make sure someone didn't swap my grill with an Excursion. I did find a girl under there once claiming to be a sister of an FTE moderator.
Okay now, dont laugh....but I open the hood everytime it's put into the garage.....especially in the summer.....to let the heat out. I hope to keep this truck "forever" and would like to delay replacing the _rubber hoses (etc.) as long as possible. It's a quick check of the fluids also before starting out (except the oil). Changing the oil every 2500-3000 miles as well as tire rotation gives me plenty of opportunities to check the stuff underneath. Okay, go ahead and laugh.
