so I bought the dorman part which is metal. Pulled out the old part and it had RTV and teflon tape. I'm guessing it was removed before. So I installed the part clean and guess what. BIG *** LEAK. UGH. Is there a trick to get this working right or do I need to go back to RTV and teflon tape?

Yup. the Y-Pipe had a section of o-ring cut out, even though I lubed it with coolant. I got another o-ring, lubed it with grease and a chuck pop out. 3rd one was slightly smaller but it looks like it went in. Need to fill and pressurize. I'll keep you up to date.
