Power Steering pump whine

yesterday, for the first time, I heard a whining noise associated with the steering wheel.

I am close to be totally deaf, so don't know when it started.

I just checked the fill level on the stick, and could not see anything on it, so I added some fluid, and oops it is now 1/2 inch from the top.

should I suction some out?
and how serious is the whining noise....

decades gone by, when I heard the noise with good ears, I changed the pump.

John maybe its just my luck, but there is something about ford power steering pumps... my F350 is not doing it yet, but my F150 has been doing the whining noise now for about 7 years... still has not died yet, its just annoying. i actually have a spare for the f150 I bought thinking it was going out and its still sitting in my parts bin waiting for the damn thing to die.

it seems to be doing the job okay, just the noise is aggravating.

I will suck out the excess fluid tmw come daylight.
if I don't, it will puke out all over the place when it gets hot.

as kenn stated fords are LONG LONG noted for p/s pumps being/getting noisy, only fix is to replace it, yet how long before that one starts is WHO knows, personally i'd live with it till it fails 100%

Here is a little advice. Crank it first. Remove cap while running and look at the fluid level. I have always had to slightly overfill mine to keep it from whining. If I check it with the engine off and the fluid level is correct on the stick, mine will always whine. If you look down in the reservoir when it is whining, you may see why it is whining. The fluid looks like the last little bit of water in a sink. Air is being pulled into the pump. This advice works for me anyway. Won’t hurt to try it.

I was always taught that the power steering, like the transmission was to be checked at operating temp and running.

I think you’re right, but it is nearly impossible to get the level correct with the engine running and the fan blowing while trying trying to pour fluid in the reservoir even with a funnel. What I do is check it with the engine off if the pump is whining to see where the level is. I then add fluid and start the engine to see if the whine goes away. Well, you get the picture.

I have been a Sea Foam advocate for decades in motorcycles, way back in the 80s if not before.

that particular treatment is one I have never used.
just added it to my invoice

as for looking at the level while it is running,
I have to get on a Step Stool to even find the cap to the Steering fluid Pump.

will do that tonight after the sun goes away, too damn hot right now.

Check it while it's running, not turned off, and only that after you've turned the steering lock to lock several times. Operated the brakes a few times, etc in order to purge ALL the air bubbles from the system. Fluid level will boil up and out of the reservoir if you pump the brakes with the engine off and bleed off the residual pressure in the brake booster.

funny thing is,
it has never whined before I got the Winch installed.

they disconnected the passenger side battery, and did some welding on the bumper obviously, to replace the parts they cut out, to remove the old winch.

how that would effect a pump?
I have no clue.

They might have turned the steering wheel without the engine running. Mine will puke power steering fluid any time that I do this.

when I went to the shop, midway through the install,
the wheels were dead ahead straight.

all of the work was being done in the center of the brush guard.

Don’t have a clue, but it will puke if I have the truck jacked up and turn the wheels without the motor running. Surely, this has happened to someone else here.
