Contaminated fuel system

Well gents, long story short after doing a deep dive going through my new-to-me 04’ 6.0 I’ve come across the wonderfulness of there being gas in the truck. That’s right, gasoline. I pulled the filters and holy moly does it smell like 91 octane. Seems no wonder the truck didn’t start for the last owner. I’m guessing next steps are drain the tank, replace the o-rings at the upper filter, and replace the HFCM (mine has the fuel heater in it anyways). Thoughts? Tips? How fubar is this engine now?

You are probably ok. Just pump out as much as you can. You can disconnect the discharge line from the HFCM and put a hose on and run it to a bucket. If it were me, after pumping out as much as you can, I'd put a sump in it. Installing the hole for the sump will drain most of any fuel leftover from the pumping.

I am considering a sump and using the HFCM while using the stock fuel return just to eliminate the potential issues with the fuel pickup
