Heated throttle body

Always gotta be something...

I have been losing coolant, which I chalked up to a dirty system I recently flushed. Just today the leak got bad enough to create a big puddle, and I was able to find it.

It was that short coolant line under the TB, I went to remove it, and it snapped the elbow on the TB. Is there a good way to repair this, or should I just bypass it permanently? I won't buy a new TB if I can avoid it, I just spent a whole lotta money on this thing, and I'd like to at least save a little.

For the short term, I just bent the hose from the top of the TB over.

At least I found my leak, yay?

Plenty of folks have bypassed the throttlebody coolant ports with no reported issues.

This heating circuit helps prevent icing of the throttlybody in colder climates, if you don't live in the north there is nothing at all wrong with bypassing it and even if you do you may never experience a frozen throttle if you don't do much hwy driving.

I do live pretty far up north, at about 2000 feet. I do some highway driving, if I want or need to go anywhere. Freeway driving, only sometimes.

Bypass it. You could always look for a used/cheap one while it's bypassed.

My pal is working in SLC and lowest area is 4000ft, he has never had an iced over TB on his winter beater there. Heck my 4.9 is not heated either from the factory.

Bypass it and get on with life. I think the small port on the water outlet is just a 1/8" NPT.

It's to prevent icing in wetter climates when it's cool, sopping wet, and the engine's not yet warmed up fully. Or working hard.

They were retrofitted under warranty on early engines. Earlier versions had a heat riser off the manifold, a thread a few weeks back explained.

The legal concern was that the throttle plates can freeze open, leading to runaway that, once you wreck,
has no visible cause, since the ice melts out before the forensics team gets there.
How often it happens? Around here, where it's cool and wet, not infrequently. I bypassed a leaking one
once (on a Mitsu) and it would pretty regularly ice up in commuting when I dropped down onto the floating bridge across Lake Washington.
If you're ready for it, it's not often fatal, but it can surprise you when it happens. Or when the thing ices up
so badly that airflow's restricted. You get good at switching off, coasting as long as you can get away with, and then restarting.
It usually melts out by then.

Hmmm, I never knew you could bypass those coolant lines on the TB.

You just need to either loop the loop before the TB, or plug the source. Like a heater core.

Steve83 (bless his hateful, intelligent heart) says the 4.9 likely doesnt have one because of the low volume of air that goes into it

Which , combined with the exhaust manifold placement vs the intake where it wraps around , so the throttle isnt far from that source, makes a little bit of sense. But If you were to find the ideal conditions and start WOT i could see it possible lol
