I was having difficulties getting my sending unit to sit flush with the tank when installing a new one. One side seems to sit flush with the tank the other you can sort of see just the slightest bit lifted and the rubber gasket underneath. Should I try working it until it sits completely flush with the tank all around or does it look ok to start installing the tank. I don’t want to have to do double the work if it’s not done installed correctly.
To me in the first picture the gasket has pushed out and not sealing.
A trick is before you install the rubber O-ring to put a little wheel bearing grease in the area the gasket goes.
Put the gasket in and then a little more on top before you put the sender in.
When tapping the lock ring to lock it do a little on each side to keep it centered on the sender and the opening.
I have never had one leak and they all have sit flush or even.
I also dont remember seeing any of the O-ring when together.
Good luck

Thanks for the feedback. I knew it looked a bit off. Went ahead and did it like you suggested and it helped seat it in place. Thanks!
1st you put the rubber gasket, then the sending unit, then the tap turn to lock ring. All should fit flush, it looks like your rubber gasket is not seated. Also noticed that some of the lip looks to be bent on the tank seam.

your right on it being bent on the seams. those bends are actually preventing me from installing the tank as it’s adding about a few inches or more on each side. Now to go through the return process
Well that is what usually happens in shipping. I would not be surprised if the replacement tank comes in bent also. Next time insp the tank if you go pick it up from a local parts house. I ordered mine from O'Reilly's and had to get them to order another one since the the 1st one came in bent.
If you mail ordered it, you might give them a heads up that it needs packaged up better. Or you might use a 2 pieces of wood or as pair of sheet metal pliers and just carefully re-bend it, just the amount you need to get it to install. And of course insp the pinch seam very carefully. If worried, then put some "The Right Stuff" on it as a back up.
