Hi I looked and could not find my issue. I have a 2003 ford f350 with the 6.0. I been through 4 starters since may. I have replaced starters and relay under dash key cylinder and ignition box in column. The problem I am having is sometimes you will turn the key to the accessory position and it will start cranking. Also some times going down the road it will put power to the starter and by the time I realize it the starter is burned up. Can go a month with no issues or the next day. I been pulling the relay after I start it but I forgot to today and lost another starter. Last one I put in was a bosh and I tried the 6.4 up grade. I would like to figure out my issue I know my issues don’t happen if I pull the relay I believe I have replaced everything before relay.
It sounds like an electrical issue. Given that sometimes it engages in the accessory position I would start be looking at the wiring in the column including the ignition switch.
Forgot, weird electrical issues have a tendency to be ground issues.
New one on me and you have electrical issues for sure, my 03 starter was replaced once since I have owned it. Had a cracked solenoid, not sold separately at the time.
If OP returns, or anyone else has a similar issue, check the Body control module (above the fusebox) for water intrusion and corrosion.
I had a customers truck (it was gas) that was eating starters and it was because it had a messed up BCM. If you unplug it and see green corrosion inside the plug, it's done.
Theres a writup around here (maybe in the Excursion forum) about taking them apart and cleaning them up. We just ordered a couple from a salvage yard and used the one that was in the best condition.
