I figured I'd ask here as someone if not most know way more about these engines than I do.'
I have a 1968 n700 with a 330 the exhaust manifolds were severely damaged, engine came out for exhaust work, still on the stand, I was able to pick up a running 391 but smokes out of valve cover similar to blow by but with no noticeable pressure.
My question is... can i put the 391 crank in the 330 block and use the same 330 rods and pistons?
From my reading the 330 has a 3.5 inch stroke and the 391 has a 3.79 in stroke and according to my math should make the 330 into a 357. We all know the ft engine has the piston way down in the hole from factory, so this will increase displacement as well as compression. Has anyone done this before?
I'm going to measure how far down in the hole the piston is now and see what I have to work with. Looks like I'll be up in the hole 0.145 inches at top dead center.
Both engines are ft engines though. I'm trying to spend as little as possible on this, the 330 was rebuilt years ago but with low run time so I wouldn't pull pistons out of the cylinders, just new bearings and crank swap over.

That won’t work, simply swapping in the longer stroke crank will cause the pistons to extend past the top of the block
I don’t know of any FT engine combination using a 391 crank and 330 bore size

I need to measure how far the piston is in the bore, i know its down in the hole pretty far. I am going to do that before I tear anything apart.
After mesuring, I'm at 0.165 in the hole with the 330. In theory I will have 0.020 worth of clearance after the crank swap. I'm going to give it a shot and see what happens, worst come to worst I will have to pull it back apart and try something else.
always fun to be different and try things just for the hell of it.
