Voltage problem

Greetings,
I'm brand new to the forum and desperately need guidance.
im the original owner of a 97 F350 power stroke. Today I started driving my truck and I noticed the dash board battery charging indicator was in the red (left side). The tachometer started fluctuating. And the automatic transmission started shifting rough out of first gear.
I have never had any issues with the voltage regulator or alternator.
I drove home and connected the batteries to a battery charger. It registered 1 volt on the meter.
If any of you could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it.

The 97 is a bit different, but not my much. The following was written for the 99-03 but should be of help.

I had the same experience and it was a bad alternator. Remove the alternator and have it tested at your nearest auto supply parts store.
