Hey all, had a close call a few days ago pulling onto the highway. Ended up in the oncoming lane and luckily didn’t get hit by the 70mph oncoming traffic. Made it to the shoulder on the wrong side of the road.
My steering gear box shaft sheered in half!
Shop quoted just shy of $2k ($1,550 of which is the new gear box) to fix it and says they don’t recommend a reman gear box since they have had multiple return back to the shop for warranty after having issues. Price fit parts seems crazy from what I’ve seen online.
Are you aware of an aftermarket gearbox that is heavier duty / reliable? Suggestions on places to buy them from? Thanks
PSC makes a freaking awesome brand new ( not remanned) box that is a significant upgrade from the stock stock for way less than the $1500 part price the shop quoted you.
Do a bit of googling around and take a look at PSC’s website. The other popular options are red head and blue top, but both of those are just remanned Ford boxes (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I’m guessing your shop has you scared of remans now).

I’ve had Blue, Red and Ford remans and all did not last long.
PSC now. It is definitely heavier than the others. It uses GM steering fluid.
Don’t keep wasting your money and just pay the big price once.
Thanks so much for the advice! I’ll look at PSC. Forgot to mention my truck is a 2000 excursion. Figured I’d clarify seeing that my signature and most of my posts here in the forums have been about my 7.3l.

The frame/ chassis/ running gear never really changed in the short six model year run of the Excursion. There were a few interior and insignificant exterior appearance changes, but the steering system is the same on all 4x4 Excursions.

Seems there was another one of these not too long ago. Was this the original, or a parts store replacement? Do you know how much time was on this particular box?
Get the cylinder assist or at least the ported box so you can add it later. With the cylinder assist and 35's I can steer with 1 finger while stopped. It almost turns too easy. It would be a good time to take a look at the shaft between the box and the column.
