DEF at a truck stop will be fresher than anything on a store shelf since it gets replaced nearly daily. I would NOT buy pump DEF at a car island though if it had it, only from high volume truck stops. I have not once purchased a DEF jug because it would go stale before I could use it. When not towing I fill maybe twice a year.

As far as the level goes, it does it by percentage based on what the iDash tells me. It will stay at 100% until it is 80% full, then drops on the gauge. I think it works on 20% increments on my 2019

You use less in fuel though on that 23 with regens, so call it a wash.

If stored in a cool, dark place, DEF has up to a 2 year shelf life. Most companies are finally putting date of manufacture on them, but not all. I won't buy without a date.
In a lot of cases, generic brand box/jug DEF is cheaper than at the pump. Comparing pump to the most expensive brand on the market is apples to oranges. DEF is all made the same and made to the same standards.

Most I have spent on a fill was $22, which was right around 7 gallons. Majority of my fills were less than $14 for less than 1/3 full on the gauge. Not worried about the cost of DEF, its cheap compared to fuel. I don't think I ever spent more than $3.50 a gallon on it.

So it seems that I should do nothing and hope for the best?

Do whatever you feel good about, the truck will let you know if there is an issue.

My 2012 quit using DEF at one point. It was the craziest thing. I realized it like 6 months has gone by. I towed a heavy travel trailer for three week vacation still nothing. No error codes nothing. About 3 years later the truck had a weight loss surgery. It never used DEF that whole time.
