Towing with F150 Supercrew

Whats the longest trip anyone has gone with an F150 Supercrew, towing up to 6500#, how did the truck do, did you have any problems???? Just curious. I am planning a trip with my TT, which weighs about 6200# loaded for the first time on a long trip. I do have the 4.10s and the 5.4L. I am really happy with the truck on the short 1 1/2 hour trips. Any input would be great. Thanx Rich

Towing TT with 2004 F150 5.4 SCab

Hi...we have towed our Jayco 26FBS TT for about 1000 miles now...with our 2004 F150...5.4...3.55...OEM tow pacakge. TT weighs about 7000lbs loaded with our gear....and the F150 6150....2 passaegers...full fuel....ready to go. I confirmed all weights at a certified scale.

We ahve had no issues what-so-ever. My digital trany temp gauge is typically around 180.....did see a short spike of 207 on a longer grade uphill.

It doesnt like to pull in OD....except downhill or real flat road....but that si to be expected with the 3.55 rear end. Got about 8.5 mpg towing avg fule consumption so far in that 1000 miles towing.

Question

Hey guy 914, where did you mount the temp sensor for the trans gauge? I have an Autometer gauge from our previous tow vehicle and would like to use gauge in our '04 lariat sc 4x4
Thanks, Steve

Temp sensor location in transmission

HI.....i put the sensor in the pressure port....top left side of the transmission. From what i have read here on this forum and elsewhere...thats where most folks have successfully done so. works fine for me.

thanks guy 914. I'll check it out. Just returned from a camping trip to the Sierras with lots of steep, slow uphill grades. Wished for a temp gauge. Also wished the coolant temp gauge showed some movement. Is the coolant really never changing temp even under worst conditions?

Never had any problems pulling a 31 foot 7000LB (wet) trailer with our 2001 5.4L Supercrew. As many as 3000 miles in 2 weeks and as much as 700 miles in a day at temps as high as 98 degrees. Last trip was from the Great Lakes to Colorado and back.

Thats good news Canadiancrew. I never doughted the truck doing it's job, but just wanted to put the feelers out there for the f150, cause I always here more about the f250's towing. The biggest thing is staying in your safe weight limit and have a good time!!!!!!!!!! Thanx for the replies Rich

I have an expy with the 5.4 3.73 4x4 and the temp gauge never moves on it. Even after the 35 mph hill for 10 minutes @ 3000 RPMs in 2nd gear.

I was thinking it wasn't working, but the truck keeps going and going and going.

I took my 2001 Supercrew with a 5.4 3.73 4x4 from Northern Maine</ST1 to <ST1Southern California</ST1lace a total of 8600 miles. Didn't weigh the trailer but it was fully loaded, I was always able to keep speed and ran with my OD off and cruise set. I slept in the truck and kept it running for hours. I enjoyed the A.C. for the whole trip. And never came close to overheating, I even overslept in Arizona when I woke outside temp was over 100 the interior was cool and the truck had raised in temp a little but nothing to be worried about. I am taking a trip this week 2600 miles round trip with that same trailer and I have no worries about my Ford 145,000 miles and counting. My trailer is a 6x12 closed box. My fuel economy suffers though dropping to 12 miles per gallon making gas stations a frequent stop.

I am looking at buying the '04 f150 4x4 supercrew but will need it to pull a 2-horse trailer approx. 7200lbs loaded. Has anyone done this or had any trouble doing this?
thanks for you opinions

according to this link, your max trailer weight would be 8200 or 9200 depending on your gear ratio in the rear.

http://www.fordtrucks.com/specs/2004/2004_f150_7.html

With that said, you should be okay, but you would be near the limit.

Wow, allot of good information here!
I have been trying to decide on what type of trailer to buy - 5th Wheel or Travel. I need BIG (30-38 foot w slide outs)- since we are moving in full time- at least until the truck is paid off ;-) I have a 2003 Ford F150 Supercrew w/factory tow package (4X4) 5.4 Liter.
If I go with the 5th wheel I'll need a 5th wheel hitch, so any reccomendations on that would be good... I have read that a "slider" is recommended because of the short bed in the Supercrew but I really don't know enough to walk in to a dealer and sound educated...
Reccomendations or experiences welcome.

Thanks in advance,

I don' want to be negative but you are not going to pull a large 5th wheel with slide outs with a Supercrew. I pull a 31 foot but it has no slides and is a bumper pull. The tongue weight is 900Lbs. The tongue weight of an over 30 foot 5th wheel will be 1500 to 2000Lbs. If you take your gross weight capacity of your truck (not towing capacity) and minus your actual truck weight your will have your load capacity. I weighed my truck in at 5160LBS with driver and a 1/3 tank of gas. Take gross of 6600LBs - 5160 gives me cargo capacity of 1460LBS. As you can see a 1500Lb tongue weight already puts you over weight. You also need to factor in luggage the wife the dog kids the weight of the new hitch you want to add etc. Another factor is that your truck is a 4x4. I got a 2x4 as its gives another 500Lbs in towing capacity. I also had no slides. Although I love slideouts they add a lot of weight to the trailer. My towing capacity was 8000lbs. The type of trailer you are talking about needs an F350.

Thanks for the Reality Check Canadian Crew! After reading your reply and doing some more research, I see that I am going to need a bigger truck! (or a smaller trailer - but I would rather have a new truck anyway ;-) I know this is a Ford thread but it seems to me that the Dodge Rams have superior towing capabilities (In the 350 Range)...
I have always been a Ford man but I really need the biggest 5th wheel, or travel trailer that I can get into since we are going full time... Thoughts?
