Cat replacement
I have a 2004 F150, 4.6. Low miles (75k) and the drivers side cat appears to have a rattle. Sounds like a rod knocking. Has anyone replaced these DIY? I don’t have a welder and I’m hoping it’s as simple as the videos suggest by just a few bolts and clamps. What is your experience with this? Anything that is a surprise in the process? What brand parts did you use? Will aftermarket cats pose an issue with the computer? Is Magnaflow a good choice?
Any insight and advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank You in advance!
David
They passed my local inspections just fine.
Biggest PITA is getting the pipes slipped on / off & getting the 2 top bolts off on the end of the manifold.
The ones on the manifold are usually all but gone & not possible to remove without the "blue-wrench".
On the slip fit joints, once pipes have been clamped, they don't like to come apart.
Once you do get them apart it is helpful (not required) if you have a pipe spreader to make it easier to slide on.
Use the Magnaflow website 1st. It will guide you to the specific part that you need. There are different parts for different states.
There are other manufacturers of catalytic converters. If you do not need a California legal part, you may be able to save a little bit of money going with another brand.
