Might as well start tracking down a replacement rubber fill neck. And did you get a EEC or none EEC tank? What type of tank do you have now?
"There are two differences between the tanks. Tanks with EEC have a hole in the top center of the tank. A rubber grommet and check valve are pressed into the hole. A line goes from the check valve along the inside of the passenger side frame rail to the engine compartment where it hooks up to a charcoal canister.
Non-EEC tanks don't have this hole. The other difference is the nipple for the breather line that is located right next to the nipple for the filler hose is located 180 degrees opposite. If you are going from an EEC tankto a non-EEC tankyou must also change the fuelcap to a vented style. The EEC tanks are vented through the EEC system and use a sealed fuelcap. Non-EEC tanks vent through the fuelfiller cap. If you run a non-EEC tankand a sealed cap you can and probably have fuelstarvation problems."
ive never heard of this before but pretty sure tank i ordered in NON EEC cuz theres no hole in the top.
neither of my caps look vented
and i wont know what tank i have until i get new one and drop the old one same day
I havent seen any charcoal canister type things under the hood or under the truck BUT i wasnt looking for anything like that either.....
Yep looks like you have a none vented cap, and yes once you drop the current tank you will see if you have the valve on top or not. If you have no issues with the truck then I also bet none EEC tank. Look up under the bed side and see if the vent line is fwd or aft of the fill neck line. Fwd vent line, then EEC tank.
might be awhile before i finish this
the sender supposedly get here tomorow, the carb 1 week but the tank is sept 1-23rd expected date
i suppose its asking for trouble to run a new carb on old tank if i suspect it may be rusty.....?
SO if i DONT have an eec tank/system then i SHOULD have vented tank caps?
I would not risk trashing a new carb with a old gas tank. Even if you run a couple of in line filters. Old gas, bad gas not worth it IMO. But if you just have to hear it run with the new carb, run it off a known clean can and with fresh gas. Like a 2.5 gal can setting right down by the front tire going right into the fuel pump.
i just noticed today doin stereo install, that the three prong connector to the fuel tank switch was unhooked.
would this disconnect the fuel senders to the fuel gauge and thus not let fuel gauge work??
i dont know if the switch works but one of the hoses was cutoff so either a thief did that or there was a problem with somehow
as mentioned i do have a new sender for new tank coming anyways but better to figure this out first
Well have you thought about hooking the 3 prong connector back up, apply some power and see what happens? If it was unhooked for some reason like it did not work, leaked bad or the front tank was full of junk fuel...

YUP, it was tough with entire dash reinstalled and stereo also in but finally got it on.
Good news /bad news, my switch still seems to work as it stalled out after a minute of being on front tank and instantly started up turning to rear tank
BUT my fuel gauge still didnt work
BTW filler hose seems good shape, at least compared to the vent tube hose which is very cracked and seems twisted from behindat the tank and front of the filler neck .
my new tank has the vent tube behind the filler neck so maybe this was a eec truck when it was restored 20 yrs ago and a non eec tank was put in back then?
Just replaced rear fuel tank and sender, if i didnt have to go shooping for smaller fuel sender suction hose , it wouldve taken only 45 min.
but i did pre loosen and WD40 the bolts holding tank in.
Happily, Fuel gauge DOESNT need replacing, it was just the fuel sender. it MAY not be calibrated as when its empty , its 1/8-1/4 inch under empty line and when full enough to cutoff gas pump spout it still only shows just a hair under full
BUT my vent hose is a lil kinked and may be setting it off prematurely
GOOD enough for me& girls i go out with
