Im sorta a novice when it comes to ac but I have a 2011 F250 6.7 diesel with 130k on it. The temperature in socal is in the 100s most days. It seems like my AC system isn't cooling. Or its just taking a long time blow cold. 4 months ago my expansion valve went out. I had no idea that was the issue. But I was able to rule out the major components. The truck was taken to a family friends auto shop. After they fixed it they said everything was fine. Right now it seems like its not working at its full capacity. Ive done google searches with really now luck. I dont really wanna take my truck into the shop again for this issue. Plus this truck is a 2011, I understand that its not going to work as good as a new vehicle. Hoping someone can give me some advice on where to go from here.
A manifold gauge set will help diagnose a lot of issues with the AC system. Very high probability the system is low on R134a and needs a few ounces. You probably have a slow leak somewhere. I read in the Workshop manual that Ford systems come with UV Dye in them already, but I added R134a with some added when mine was low to help find any leaks. I have to add about a half to 3/4 can every 1-2 years to bring the pressure up to spec. (Still looking for my leak!). Other easier items are cleaning the evaporator and condenser which should be checked regardless.
If your family's friend has a recovery machine have them recover the freon and you'll know if it leaked. If they charged it they should have put some UV dye in and they should have a blacklight to leak check it.
