The DODGE forum
On these types of forums (Ford, Dodge, etc) you hear about the bad, not the good. You see 50 posts about the bad - but there are 5000 of us with good tranmissions that just don't sit and sing its praises all day.
E4OD is a good transmission. It has its faults, but it is a good transmission. Sturdy, reliable, and not too expensive to rebuild.
4L60 (700R4) is Chevy's transmission that somebody earlier was trying to talk about. They have a tendancy to fail. This is the fact that they are car transmissions thrown into anything from trucks with 350's...to Suburbans with twice the weight AND 350's.
The Dodge transmissions truely are crap. They're not as bad as the AXOD from the Taurus's..but bad. Not up to capacity...bad design, etc. I wouldn't own a Dodge unless it packed a manual - and even then it'd have to be New Venture, not DC.
Beyond that...change your fluid reguarly. Add either a new coil and fin transmission cooler in front of your radiator, or an inline frame-mounted radiator to your automatic as soon as you can. Only a few degrees can be enough to reduce the burnup of the friction modifiers that keep your transmission from scattering over the transmission pan.
