All I hear is how dodge transmissions blow, yet I go the the superduty forum, and ther are planty of instances where the ford ones do too. The problem is not the transmissiond, ti is their capicity to deal with ever increasing power, and weight.
Hey bronco 351, I wasn't trying to flame. Just sticking up for my Explorer My bad if I sounded like a jerk (everything I seem to say comes out wrong ).
Some thoughts:
The 2003 Sport you mentioned is still on the same platform as my 98. Other than it having the SOHC engine as oppose to my OHV, and a few other minor changes, they're the same. These are good trucks, while not perfect, certainly not junk.
As far as the new Explorers (02+ 4 doors), I can't say I know a real lot about them. I'm sure some things in the 02 can be attributed to it being the first year of an all-new model. The major thing I've seen with the 02's and 03's in the Explorer forum has been a vibration attributed to the driveshaft. Not much else that I can think of. They have continued to be the best-selling SUV, though, which is pretty good considering the increased competition.

I believe that Ford owned 10% of Cummins stock at one point. Ford sold the stock sometime in the early nineties I believe. This is a rumor made up by diehard Ford guys and dealerships to criticize Dodge pickups. I have also heard rumors of Ford owning the Dodge body design and other stuff thats just ****.
If Ford starts using Cummins Diesels they will finally have one good engine since the 460 was taken out of production.
I bought my wife a new DODGE DAKOTA 4x4 in 2002 for that exact reason, as for the trannys I know of not one person who tells me oh I love my tranny. All these electronic shift junk trannys seem to have some problem, as for my wifes truck she has 65,000 miles on it no tranny problems, and DODGES 4.7 engine is bullet proof and she gets around 19 MPG.
Originally posted by bronco351 Yes Ford does own 100% of that company!! They sort of leased it over to Dodge. Ford is supposed to end the lease and start using it in there trucks....come the 2005 model year Trucks!!
I'm sure all of the folks with the PSD in their trucks can't wait for that to happen....finally get a REAL diesel engine.....but, fortunately, Ford doesn't have any stake in Cummins whatsoever.
By the way, I haven't had any trouble with my tranny.

Ford may not own Cummins, but Cummins IS in a long-term supply agreement with International....which is interesting, considering Internation and Ford are in bed. Its all in Cummins's Data Sheet on their web site.
The torqueflite is long gone since like 87 and uh these electronic shift trannies all do have problems, I also consider them junk, vacuum was best but even a TV cable was more reliable than solenoids, wires and a MLPS switch thats exposed to elements
I'm not a big Auto fan. I don't care who makes it. I like to shake hands with my truck down the road. maybe when I get "old" I woll buy me an auto

If Ford, Dodge, and Chevy dont start pushing the envelope. Nissan might just overtake them. While I think that the outside of the Titan is somewhat ugly. They have raised the bar. Lets just hope that Ford answers the challenge instead of being arrogant like they usually are.
I owned a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500, until a month ago. At 120,000, the trans fell on it's face.3 different trans. shops told me the following, almost word for word.
Ford, and Dodge BOTH need transmission coolers on their transmissions, no matter what. BUT, especially the Dodge. Ford is NOT as bad ad Dodge, but they NEED a tranny cooler, no matter what.
The master builder (that's what he called himself any ways), said plain out, that the Dodge trans., will ruin Chrysler, if they do NOT get them figured out !!!!!!
Gah I hate hearing all this Dodge transmission crap.. the 46RE was a piece of absolute garbage, unforunate because it was the most common one. It's the tranny that came with the 1/2 ton V8s (5.9L and 5.2L), as well as the Dakota and Durango. The 47RE, which I believe was the auto for 2500/3500 V8s and V10s were considerably stronger, though still not the greatest. But now we're talking brand new trannies for the 4.7 and 5.7 V8s; the old ones are gone. At least give the new ones a break, I haven't heard anything anything about them crapping out at 40k miles yet.
