Side shifted with a tin top cover? 1st gear synchro?
If so, this is a newer transmission. It would be a Ford "303" all synchro 3 speed, introduced in light trucks in '63, cars in '63 or '64. Early boxes had the square bell to trans pattern. In '65 the pattern changed to a rectangle.
Your trans predates this list, but this shows how far and wide, on top of '63-'64 applications, that trans was used. This plus GM used it as well.
I'll be honest, I don't know what that means.. I'm surprised that the transmission would be newer since it's in a 1960 F100 with a 223 straight six.. weird.
First gear synchro? Can you shift into first gear without the gear grinding, even when rolling?
Don't worry about side shifted. We know it is. But, does it have a cover on the side, through which the shift arms come through, or is there a tin cover on top? This is hard to tell without crawling under the truck.
But regardless, the HEF points to a later model 303. Not a real surprise, as it would be a nice upgrade and fairly easy to do.
You got it, I didn't know what first gear synchro meant, or side shifted. I need to look again under the truck, I'll do that today and take more pictures. Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. It means I also got the wrong gasket then...
So after some more searching I still can't find much info about this transmission.. anyone have any ideas? I want to get some new seals and a gasket for it (It leaks pretty badly). If it helps, this is in my 1960 2WD F100 and it's bolted to a 223 straight 6.
Well, I am claiming ignorance to start with. But I have been trying to look through the master parts catalog, the text portion of it and it looks like the tag you showed in the first pic may well be HEF-AB! The tail section number is that of a 1963 and that is where I found the HEF-AB that originally came on a 1963 P350 attach to an 8 cyl. 292 which uses the same bell housing as the 223. If that is the case, you have a smoother shifting and heavier duty tranny than the original in the '60! I tried to copy the page I was looking at to give you but don't know enough to do it.
You can buy your own digital copy of the master parts catalog that is very helpful: 1957-63 Ford Truck & Van Complete Master Parts Text & Illustrations Catalog CD | eBay
In the textbook I found it on page 952 There are additionally two illustrated books on the disc as well that answer a lot of questions.
In the illustration book I believe it to be on page 415, illustration 70.3. There it identifies it as a Ford 303 tranny which was used in 1963 E100, F100/250, P100/500. Looking at the pic there and then at your tranny, it really looks the same. too bad I can't send the pics to you but if you get your own disc, you will really be happy.

Thank you so much to the both of you! I had no idea that someone switched the transmission out of this thing.. especially to something that extra heavy duty... go figure!

I didn't see an AD listed in the book for 63 as his tail piece denotes. There were only A-A and A-B, Is that for a later year! I have some of the next books but not complete enough to tell.
