I'm not so sure about this Dave. I checked the diagrams over at Gary's site. Looks like the 300/6 is different (obv.) from the V8s. The exception are the diesels and the 460. Otherwise, it looks like the 4.2, 5.0, 5.8 and 6.6 engines all use the same Y pipe. The one exception is 1980 302 in California, it has cats in the Y pipe.

The 300/6 I have has one of these as it's from a '79 F-150.

Gotcha covered with this, too, should you decide to use the 300/6.

Hey sorry it took so long for me to get back, it has been a crazy few weeks.. so this is really gotten the gears going in my head. What would you consider for all of this? I'm out in Utah so I know I'd probably have to get it shipped out this way. But also I don't know if it's going to happen for the next couple months if I do go forward with it, just so I can make sure I have all the funds secured in this nice economy we live in.

At this point any good motor you can find other than what is in the truck now you will need motor, frame mounts, bell housing & clutch assy to match the motor.
A radiator, throttle cable and little rewiring should be ready to go.
As I said on the 300 six the clutch pivot on the motor side can be an issue you would need to work around.

You can then keep the transmission / transfer case / drive train you have now.
It would really help if you had a complete truck to do the swap with so you have every thing.
I was lucky that when I bought my truck there was a prats truck that had everything I needed for my rebuild and then some.
I have not seen any 80 to 86 trucks since when I look

Let's recap here:

300/6 from a 1979 F-150 - 106K miles and was running when removed. Full Disclosure: this engine needs a gasket set installed. It appears to leak from one (or more) of the following;
  • Valve cover
  • Lifter cover
  • Oil pan
I had planned to put the engine (on a stand) inside a kiddie pool and de-grease it. Then, it was going to get a pressure wash. I haven't had a chance to do that but it would go a long way to making it look nice and make changing gaskets an easier job. It will also need a tune-up (plugs, cap, wires, rotor, etc.). I have not done anything else to this engine except strip off the old parts (rad. hoses, heater hoses, and some vacuum lines for the charcoal cannister). This is a pretty simple engine so re-doing the vacuum lines should not be hard. The EGR is still bolted on but could be deleted. I have a video of the vacuum lines and their routing. I also found pics of the engine before I bought it.

I have set of the motor mount brackets that bolt to the frame. They are cleaned up and ready for paint. Motor mounts are still available from places like Rock Auto and Summit (I've spoken with Anchor Industries, the manufacturer of most of the engine/transmission mounts, they're still in production).

I also have a set of the EFI exhaust manifolds for the engine. They're also cleaned up and ready to install. This is common swap for the 'log' style exhaust manifold that came from the factory. A 1994 exhaust from an F-150 will bolt right on (thanks for this info @FuzzFace2 ).

The throttle cable is still attached to the engine and I have a second one from my parts truck. If you look closely, the clutch pivot is visible in the video (which I can make available on YouTube). You can still get the pivot ***** from places like LMC Truck. The mechanical fuel pump is also still on the truck but you'll probably want to consider installing a new one (I'd go with Carter or something from NAPA).

I have about $600 in the engine, manifolds and motor mount brackets. I'd just like to re-coup my investment.

More things to consider: I have an AOD transmission that I planned to use with the engine. I'd be willing to sell that, too. It's been rebuilt (I can see the rebuilder's stamp on it) but have no idea how long ago. I had planned to have a local, reputable shop check it out before installing it. You would need to source a flywheel and the thin plate/spacer that goes between the flywheel and engine block. I believe Jeff's Bronco Graveyard (and others) sell both parts. The AOD has a torque converter. I have $200 in the trans so that's the asking price.

I have no idea what shipping might be to Utah. I do have a FedEx hub within five miles of home. FedEx Freight is in there as well. I have access to crates and could get it ready to ship but I would think that engine should ship separately from transmission, if you decide you want both.

I'd be happy to trade emails or speak with you on the phone. Send a private message if you want to communicate more.

Thanks for the interest.

At least for the T19 / 460 set up in our trucks. Dont know if that holds true for the 400 bell & T18 that I think he has.
Still have to come up with a flywheel for the 460.

It is definitely a t18 transmission, I found 13-01-065-907 on the side of the case and that points to a T18. I am interested in possibly dropping a 460 in there, but it sounds like it may be more trouble than it's worth. It will need a rebuild, but I have a press available and kits seem to be pretty affordable.

You would have to take the 460 apart and do some measuring before knowing what it is going to cost. If the cylinder bores are worn then it will need to be bored and you will have to buy new pistons and get the rods swapped over, all that adds up.

Then you need to check the crank, see what it looks like if it needs a polish or turned down. It may have been turned already, you never know till you measure. The heads will have to be sent out, if the guides are worn that is more money.

Have you talked with a local auto machine shop? They may have some thoughts on rebuilding what you have and a way to give it a little more power. That way, you can keep what you know works/fits and focus on new parts for what you have.
