I bought a 100 Amp Tuff Stuff 100 amp 1 wire alternator about 10 months and 6,000 mile ago and yesterday while getting ready for a road trip tomorrow the alternator evidently had a voltage reg failure and is putting out over 17 volts
Is the one year warranty for real or just the normal BS.
Could I just buy a regulator?
Are Tuff Stuff alternators generally reliable?
The only way you'll know if they'll honor their warranty is to reach out to the Tuff Stuff people right away and file a claim. Let them know of your issue and see what they say. If they will swap it out for you, great, problem solved. If they blow you off you'll know their warranty is crap and you can decide how to proceed then. Options would include replacing it or rebuilding it and replacing any defective parts. Chances are there's nothing proprietary in it and repair parts are available.
I dug around in my spare parts and found a mid 1980's Ford 2g alternator and it had the plugs with it, put it on and it is working great, it actually fit better than the tuff stuff alternator, it was slightly to wide and did not align perfectly.
The tuff stuff alternator never did hold a real steady voltage, it had been up to around 16 volts a few times before.
I think I am either going to stick with the 2g alternator and keep my eyes open for a 3g, with either a 2g or 3g any auto parts can have one the next am if they do not have it in stock.
I am going to take the tuff stuff apart and see if I can get a replacement reg for it and keep it for a spare.
