I have a 1972 F250, a 360 original engine. Not interested in headers, but need to replace the manifolds. Any suggestions on something other than th stock ones?
Ive seen headers and Ive seen factory manifolds and thats it. There is aftermarket that are the same as the factory. There is also factory stuff from car engines and factory cast headers. What is wrong with your exhaust manifolds besides the passenger side one really sucking?
You have to remember that the last FE was built in 76, as it was way before the advent of the 5.0 revolution. As a dinosaur, there is not much available except for certain specialty shops that do the FE. There is only thin wall headers, or Mustang/big car 390 stock exhaust manifold repos.
Just curious, what about these. I am thinking about replacing mine as well. I am guessing they are off-shore and would need to be machined flat. Anyone have any experience or advice about these?
Those look to be a decent set of factory style manifolds. If you are just looking to replace your original manifolds there are just two options in my opinion;
1) Get a set from a junkyard or ebay.
2) Get a new set of reproduction units, there are several options.
First my Driver's side cracked, and then I decided to slightly upgrade the Passenger's side.
Dorman makes a slightly improved replacement passenger side one with a little thicker iron in some places. Mine was flat.
I cleaned it up a bit on the inside with grinding stones. A big die grinder was used.
An old Ford 75-76 HD exhaust with the ribs, like D5TE-9431-C (left) is better. It exits at a different angle, and you will have to modify the exhaust pipe a ways down.
This is a better manifold, with a center exit at a better angle. It takes longer bolts.
NumberDummy may add to this, but I think it is a 390 Truck part only. Avoid the other one that looks similar, the exhaust cross-over is in a different place.
This did not cause an imbalance. My thought is that the better manifold is on the side that has to go a longer distance over to join with the Y going down the PS, (right side). I had an even burn.
