I discovered that we’ve driven the last 30k miles with no battery hold down. Replacement hold down kits look to be a wedge and a long bolt. However, the tray doesn’t have a nut, just a 3/8” square hole. Is the nut part of the tray or a separate piece?
The nut was part of the tray (on the metal ones) (swedged in)
The rectangular hole was where the nut was
You will need another battery tray in that case
The plastic trays had a J nut insert that can be replaced IIRR
My 2000, 2003 & 2005 E-Series with 5.4's have the hold down bolt attachment nut as part of the plastic battery tray, never have seen one with a fold-over or "j clip". It would be great if that were part of the OEM battery tray.
I do make sure to use a dab of anti-seize on the hold down bolt each time its removed for any reason.
A word of caution is if removing the factory OEM battery tray most likely the bolts holding it to its brackets in the engine bay with not co-operate and possibly require drilling them out and require re-tapping those brackets. Anti-seize on those threads during re-assembly is recommended too.
With a plastic tray and J hook, is the hold down a wedge at the base of the battery or a bridge across the top of the battery? I can’t envision a J-hook holding a wedge against the base. How do you hold the hook to get the nut started?
