I took the brakes apart yesterday (front) to address the pulsating when braking. rotors did not appear warped at least visually.
pads, were worn very strangely in that the material looked like it was coming off in strands of material on the sides. never
saw that before. Anyhew...I took things apart, cleaned up the spindle good, cleaned out the channels where the slide pins
go. and then the fun began....
I'm replacing the brake fluid as it is probably 20+ years old..quite dark. opened the caliper banjo bolt and started to let it
bleed down into a bucket. Thought I would try open the bleed screw. would not budge. used heat, PB blaster multiple
times. no go. ended up stripping it. more parts,..grrrr. the piston and boots on both look fine too.
how much wheel bearing grease do I need to put inside the hub / space inside between the inner/outer bearings.
You aren’t going to visually see the rotor is warped. Hindsight being 20/20 you should have cracked open the bleeder screw first. The only reason to disturb the bango bolt is if you were replacing the caliper and/or hose. Calipers are so cheap that I don’t waste my time with seized bleeders. A thin coat on the races and repack the bearings.
ya, agreed. I don't have a dial caliper to measure run out...I took the hanging banjo bolt off to drain the old fluid as I could not crack the bleeder screw.
They are pretty inexpensive.
put new calipers, rotor/hub assembly with new inner/outer bearings and pads on. greased the new slide pins, lubricated the backing plates on the pads. installed the anti-rattle clip on
the inner pad. hooked up the brake lines to the calipers (new bolt/washers included). filled brake master reservoir with fresh fluid and
bled the air out of the lines to the calipers starting with passenger side. good firm pedal now. torqued the banjo bolt to 26 ft lbs.
Are the hoses original to the truck? Yeah, you needed to replace them. No telling the condition of the inner hose lining. Saw a guy wreck a Cuda twenty some-odd years ago because he didn't replace the hoses and had one blow out at a stop sign.
