Working on trying to find a replacement auto trans for a 4x4 ranger, model year 2000. I am not certain what engine yet as I forgot to look last time I was with the truck, My question was as far as a used unit what possible year range would be applicable for a 2000 MY and since I have not verified engine size yet, I think there were 2 engines, 3.0 and 4.0 if someone had a compatability list for each that would be helpful. If you we need more details then I will have to repost. thanks.
That year trans most likely would be a 4R55E, the bellhousings will separate from the trans, so they may interchange, trans would need to be from a 4x4 truck to.
There is no interchange between these two transmissions, and a good chance there is some difference year to year. The 5er was troublesome in the first few years, so changes/differences may be found in different model years.
And a used transmission is always a gamble.
Figure out what engine and get the codes off the label on the transmission.
You can then buy ONCE, and install ONCE, and be driving quicker.
Could not find label on transmission. have good flashlight and vehicle is up in air, Found that it is a 3.0l engine, actually year is 2003 (MFG 10/2002) 4x4 auto and the trans has the ISS and OSS Reason for these questions is I have located a few replacement units locally and was hoping to get either a buildable core to just swap and I build myself or get a running takeout and build my core if parts are scarce (a real thing now a days) Thanks for the info and hope this helps, thanks.
Now, since this seems to not be getting much traction, there is not much of a verified way to determine which transmission Is in the 2001 ranger automatic that is bad, and I found a 2003 with a running driving unit, What would be the chances that a 2003 auto that appears to be identical would possible install and function within the 2001 without major problems? The tag(s) are of no help, and the vin decode for some reason says it has something completely different than what I am seeing. Lets just assume that these automatics are a 5r44e and a 5r55e. Is there dire circumstances to installing a 5r55e in place of a 5r44e? I have asked 2 very seasoned and highly trained ford technicians and gotten 2 completely different answers. Has this been done? Will it fail? my research yields to me that there is complete interchangeability. There is one part listing for this housing and just different torque ratings. Hope there is someone here that might know.
