A long road trip.....

Just returned from a 2700 plus road trip from the Pacific Nothwest to South Dakota and back.
Crossed the Continental Divide many times. Highest elevation was 9700 plus feet, 32 degrees, and snowing, but not sticking to the road.
I had a friend following me with his F-150 eco boost and trailer.
He kept up but with only 1770 pounds of payload, he was riding nose high.
I had to keep him in mind when driving, sometimes having to slow down on hills and losing my momentum as I had to pass slower big rigs, etc. instead of keeping it in the power band which in my set up seems between 3 - 4.5 k.
I could pull "most" hills at 55 and still have plenty of pedal in 3rd gear, if needed.....
I found going up hills the truck did better without tow/haul on, but I used it going down to keep it in a lower gear and off the brakes.
My truck is a 2011 SD 6.2 SC FX4 short bed with just over 150k.
Trailer is 25 foot and around 7k bumper pull.
All my gauges stayed dead center regardless of outside temps or terrain.
She ran great and averaged 10 MPG.

A couple of pictures of Yellowstone falls (lower) from the brink, and then looking back up to the falls from downstream in the canyon.
Hiking down to get the brink view was a major grade of about 800 feet down, then back up, as you might be able to tell by view showing the brink and then the top of the canyon where you start out from.
I wished I could have pulled that grade as good as my truck!

Nothing like a great trip report with the 6.2. Sounds like you had a great time! Early June we did ~2700 miles roundtrip from PNW to Westminster, CO. First time east of the Rockies and it was quite an interesting trip. We caught US 40 east of Salt Lake all the way over to Empire where we caught I-70 up and through the Eisenhower tunnel at 11200 feet elevation. Stayed on I-70 all the way to Rifle on the way back, then headed north to catch US 40 again at Dinosaur. I've got ~56K on the 6.2 now - most of that is towing the ORV which comes in around 8500-8700 loaded with full fresh water like this trip. With the 16" wheels and MorRyde suspension it does sit a bit higher and therefore presents a little more wind resistance. Averaged about 8.5 for the trip. It definitely was the biggest workout I've given the 6.2. With its solid reputation I expect mine will be chugging along like yours at 150K+ - one of the reasons I bought it.

While there I spent a day at Rocky Mountain NP hiking in the Bear Lake Corridor area - still a fair amount of snow so made good use of the microspikes. Put in a little over 13 miles and made it to 6 different alpine lakes. Definitely need to make another trip back to spend more time there.

Rest area somewhere in Colorado along US-40.

"The Loch" sits about 10500 feet.

Nice. Glad to read your trip went well and no issues towing. This is where I am right now, needing to decide on an F150 or moving into the 250 realm. I am looking at a 2018 F150 with a 5.0 engine and then also a 2017 F250 with the 6.2 that is several thousand and more and may not fit in the garage. The issue is that my wife is wanting a travel trailer that is in the 30-32' range for overall length and I think I need the F250 but still hoping the F150 will be enough.

Payload is EVERYTHING on the tow vehicle. The 5.0 motor will pull it, stopping is another animal all together. With that length trailer you will need a long bed, WHICH takes away payload. My friends 150 was sagging badly, but he didn't care, he would if we had big side winds, etc......
The conventional wisdom is to leave some room on payload for added safety. You must factor in the tongue on the tow vehicle FIRST, loaded as you would going camping, that size trailer most likely will be over 1k. Often times they move the trailer axles into the middle of the trailer, to reduce tongue weight, but that opens up all sorts of new issues, with butt swing, sway, and bent axles...... Do you research and DON'T trust sale folks.
