econoline hvac issues

mechanic here got a bunch of Econoline vans i take care of alot of them i have already re routed vacuum lines through firewall and they are still having issues going to defrost. Problem is a lot of these vans are conversions with wheelchair lifts and have a big load on them going uphill. I've tried check valves and vacuum reservoirs and they help but haven't fixed the problem just take a little bit longer to show up. im wondering if anyone has ever added an electric vac pump solely for the hvac system and if so what pump are you running? & how is it setup? thanks.

I hesitate to raise this with a professional but does your routing include a new reservoir? A solid reservoir is key to proper vent operation under load. With a new reservoir, we can go heavy coast-to-coast on I-40 with no air misdirection. As hard as she’ll go through AZ and NM.

I can relate, I put a new reservoir under my passenger side dash and it continued to go to defrost, replaced the anti-backflo valve yet it still went to defrost, I just accepted it, I had considered putting a vacuum pump on it tho, Ford lists them for their diesels.

It might help if you'd add the year of these affected E-Series but generally assuming all components of the HVAC vacuum system are functioning properly there's no reason it shouldn't work as designed. I wonder what you're missing during attempts to diagnose these problems.

I have tried reservoirs big and small even tried a check valve in front of reservoir nothing worked. I've smoked all hvac vac lines no leaks. thinking of using dorman 904-214 vacuum pump off the powerstroke trucks and keeping a van at the shop for a few days to see how it works out.

Have you tested for leaks downstream of the reservoir? The line that goes to the HVAC control panel should hold a vacuum, correct? I ask because an aux vacuum pump might not be enough if there’s a significant leak. Does it default to defrost from dash vent mode only or also from floor vent mode also?

You talk about multiple conversion vans. What do they do with the vacuum line to the rear air handler? It’s a blue line in factory passenger vans.

He like the rest of us has found out ALL the later Econolines have the HVAC vacuum bleed off, conversion, passenger, cargo, all, and the 'fix' thats been mentioned on here and youtube doesn't always work.
If you add the vacuum pump, do you really need a reservoir, I never got around to it, mine is someone else's problem now, that being the only issue it had.

I am not familiar with the vacuum pump setup on diesels. If you had to design something from scratch it could get expensive. At a minimum I would install a vacuum switch to control the pump. Then there would need to be some thought about when to completely disable the system. Please let us know what you decide.

I would be looking for a leak
The HVAC vacuum system and its reservoir should hold vacuum for days
I suspect yours is not

For those asking, it appears that the vacuum pump is simply wired to power that's ON when in RUN. That doesn't preclude an internal switch in the pump but I would expect that one would be shown if it exists.

The vacuum pump assembly looks like it could have an internal vacuum switch. It should... because it costs about $200.

Locating vacuum leaks can be difficult. I don't have any bright ideas on how to do this.

I wonder how many of them it takes to run a power brake booster on an old hotrod

You need a larger pump for that, think it came in a kit for like $300, I looked. I never found my leak, I couldn't hear it bleed off either when shut down, could have been the line running to the rear, not sure how it worked, know there was a secondary switch in the ceiling for the rear blower, its old, they aren't worth the bother of tearing everything out, after my gymnastics just to rig up another source put me back in surgery I was done with it, Ford gets an F for that crap since there are so many failure with the heat default to defrost. If you can pull the dash switch, put a hand vac and check there, likely it could be your loss.
