Had three plugs and coils replaced at a shop three months ago. I thought I'd change the rest myself but while in there decided to pull and inspect the coil and plugs they put in. Coil checked out Ok (Motorcraft) but the plug looked like this. Hard caked on black stuff at the top, difficult to even scrape it off. There was no oil, dirt or residue in the plug well so I don't know what could have done this. I'm wondering it they even changed out the old plug at all. Any thoughts?
I would have a hard time believing that build-up occurred over 3mo.
Even the gap on that plug looks a bit excessive, but it is just a picture & not a real measurement.
Is that because of a "shady shop"? Maybe.
The black substance may be burnt rubber if the old coil boot split & was arching to the wall through the boot.
