I'm in need of a alternator for my 88 302. However all these alternators have 3 wires pre-built into the new units, having to cut and splice the stock harness. Any one know of a alternator with just the 2 empty plugs.?? 3 wires not removable from new unit, crimp connectors.
That is a feeble attempt to overcome the fire prone battery connection the 2G alternators were saddled with. Ford issued a TSB to ALWAYS replace that battery connector anytime you disconnected it/replaced the alternator. While I am not a fan of using crimp connections it is an attempt to force not reusing that connector again. Given the amount of power that goes through those wires I would solder and cover with heat shrink if you stay with a 2G.
I would highly suggest to go with a 3G alternator conversion. Much better design and gets you away from this mickey mouse game.
They do not all melt the connectors
If your connector is good, I'd take that alternator back and get one that plugs in like it's supposed to
I do keep one of those new connectors in my toolbox and would advise you to replace your connector when you do replace the alternator
The connectors get loose internally, that makes heat, which melts the connector.
I’ve looked around, and found a few options, but does anybody have any input on who makes the best kit to upgrade to a 3G alternator? This is for a 94 with a 460 auto trans.
The threads I’ve found on here with kits seem to all be a few years old, and the web pages linked don’t work anymore.
