Question.
I'm thinking of getting a 2000 f550. Only issue is it is 2wd. If I were to swap it to a 4wd would I also need to change the rear axle or can I leave the original axle in the back and get a new front one with the same gear ratio? If I don't need to replace the rear axle then do I need to get a front one from the same year as the rear?

There would be no reason to swap the rear out provided it has the same gear ratio. A 550 is leaf sprung isnt it? IIRC the early SD's 250/350 used a D50 front and the 450/550's SD's used a D60 which is stronger. Might be a bit tough to find a wrecked F550 for parts but who knows.

The last f550 we had at work that was 4x4 which was a 1999 model used a dana 60 leaf sprung front axle, it used regular 8x170 hubs but had the hub adapters to go to the 550 wheel bolt pattern. you will more than likely need to regear the front axle unless you find one from an f550, most had like a 4.88 gear ratio.
