tv cable and idle screwadjustment

I have a 1987 ford f150 with the 302 and aod.

I'm pretty sure the idle screw has been moved because the screw was all the way in and tight, A previous owner probably had to set it that high to keep it idling on 5 cylinders. When I got all that fixed I just set it toward the lower end of it's adjustment.

recently the idle air controller went out and i had to turn the idle screw way up to keep it from dying when i stop, of coarse after I fixed it I apparently set it a bit low, as the trans shifts a bit earlier than it was. before that i believe it was about right based on shift points but, I want to do it correctly.

I can't seem to find procedure to adjust the tv cable. I've read that you have to use a gauge but can't find procedures for it. All I can find In my Haynes manual basically says to set it neutral not loose not tight. I may not be looking in the correct chapter. but that can't be right, because it is a decent bit past neutral and is still shifting early and soft. and has to be a decent bit tight that it is right now for the shifts to firm up a bit and come at what I have read are the right speeds.

Any help I appreciated.

First set the throttle blade stop screw correctly, the motor should just barely idle with the IAC uplugged. With that done and IAC reconnected the motor should settle into a 650-700rpm idle when warmed up.
Then adjust the TV cable to just take all the slack out of it at closed throttle. Do a test drive and if the trans shifts too early increase preload on the cable 1 notch and test again. There are a few notches of adjustment range that are in the correct window and there is no danger in going too high for a test it will just make the upshifts late and possibly lug the motor on downshifts. If that happens go down 1 notch and test again.

I don't remember exactly but the whole idea is that the shift points are throttle position dependant so more throttle = later shifts. With light throttle I think it should be in OD by about 40mph

I'm not that worried about overdrive coming when it should, even with the cable set a bit low you still have to get to about 50-55 and let off the gas for it to go into overdrive, which don't really bother me. If it's In od much earlier than that it bogs the motor down more than I like. As long as the first 2 shifts are good I'm happy.
Also, how late can get the shift points without damaging the transmission. With a bit of a load behind it, it really doesn't like hills.

You can't damage the trans with late shifts, you will know the setting is to high when it bogs the motor when downshifting.

Good to no it shouldn't harm it to set the shift points a bit late. It has to have quite a bit of tension on it to be reasonable. When it is set neutral it shifts to third before 25 mph.
