I have a 89' f-250 with a 5-speed. it always seemed to idle around 850 rpm, the other night i ran though a fast food drive through, shut the truck off and ordered, started the truck back up and i noticed it sounded higher, looked down and seen it at 1000.
I now realize it was high to begin with, so i thought i would give it a try and adjusted the idle screw. I got the rpm down to 700 this morning that way, now by the end of the evening it is back up to 1000. any ideas?
Seen some people talk about the high idle solenoid, but the idle never changes on the truck, dont know if the solenoid just dont work or if the truck dont get warm enough. It usually never reaches the N in the Normal part of the gauge.
I dont know, Im stumped.
The throttle cable might be sticking a little. Lube the throttle shaft on the injection pump. Don't use a lot of lube, just enough to make things slide better.
Use something like WD40, NAPA silicon spray lube ect.
you may wanna clean the cdr as well. could be letting excess oil in. oil burns hotter then diesel, also its adding more fuel to your system then just the fuel so that could cause the idle to get higher.
well, I think I may have lucked out. when i adjusted the idle i noticed the idle screw a little loose. so in theory, when I am cruising down the highway it is standing vertically and can sit and vibrate its way down, so i pulled it out, added a lock nut, lathered her in lock tight and reinstalled it.
So far so good. but I guess only time will tell. cross my fingers! Thanks for all the help guys!
