My instrument cluster had gauges but not tach. It bolted in place and I just used some tap and run connectors to connect to the wires in the harness at the plug 8 and G ground, C to the tach wire in the harness (I used a portable tach to make sure the wire was correct before connecting my actual tach) and B was 12 volt power. It was easy and cheap.

Pin 8 is only grounded in a V8 application, for a 6 cyl truck, it is left unhooked.

by what im reading here most ford truck tach were electrical where you would only hook up 4 wires. if this is true for all fords then a tach from another car could be hooked up by wires and then a housing could be made for it.

thanks

I think the 76? and earlier were mechanical tach's, so the later ones were the electrical

I used a Hayes Manual and the info in this sight to give me a general idea of what to do. Actually the Hayes manual was not correct but if you look at the instrument cluster connector one of the wires does not go anywhere. That was the coil wire. I grounded the G and 8 terminal. Found switched power from the ignition and hooked to B. Worked fine.

hermangarza,

Yes, your theory is correct. The same is true for aftermarket electronic tachometers.
