knocking and whine from Ac Compressor

knocking and whine from Ac Compressor
I have had a whine from the accessory drive for a few weeks in my '93 e250.
I figured it was the ps pump but it doesnt get louder on hills or windy roads.
today i heard a knocking noise coming from the bay so i listened and it sounds like the knocking and whine are both coming from the ac compressor.
this is happening with the ac off, and nothing changes when the ac is turned on. PO had some work done to the ac and recharged it, I think the compressor is new. it works well.
I have also had belt drive issues with the van since I bought it earlier this year, with a new belt wanting to bottom out the tensioner and ride on the edge of the tensioner pulley.
should I spend the $100 on a new ac clutch assembly and see if it solves the problem?

How does it feel when you turn the compressor drive plate by hand?
Remove the belt. How does it feel when you spin the pulley?
Run the engine momentarily with the belt off. Same sounds?

Before just replacing parts on mostly a whim or guess do as Tabijan suggests first. There's nothing nore foolish than not doing some degree of diagnosis first. Personally I'd look at the belt and tensioner first.

Agreed,
The correct size belt will put the tensioner belt wear marks about in the middle
Get that sorted out
Also, make sure the tensioner is not loose internally (the bushing) and going sideways as it moves
I think your pulley bearing on the compressor is shot (yes, remove the belt and spin all the pulleys by hand)
