I've had this on again / off again problem with intermittant hard shifting. To date I've changed the speed sensor (twice) and the FORD shop changed the "Transmission Range Sensor" recently (mounted on the tranny). That cost $200, and solved nothing.
The shop wants to dig into the tranny to look for something. Is there any other sensors/electronics you guys recommend I change before I get into a full tranny rebuild?
Well, they they told me that this might not solve the problem, but they can't go any further into the troubleshooting unitil the TRANSRANGE sensor was replaced,--So I agreed to it, like a idget.
Anyone?
I remember a ways back there was an excellent thread which explained 3 or 4 electrical sensors/parts to check or replace before you go digging inside the tranny. I can't seem to find it.
It seems to me I can get more (correct) information from this forum than the FORD shop.
Unless there are error codes in the computer its a real crap shoot. Hard shifts are the result of higher than normal oil pressure . The pressure is regulated electrically. In mine it was a slipping torque converter clutch that was the cause, but there was an error code.
My 94 E4OD did this before I needed a rebuild. The tranny would intermitantly shift hard. No pattern to it. The OD light did not light or set any codes to my knowledge.
BUT... there was also Torque Shudder. Torque Shudder is when the lockup clutch in the TC starts to slip. It is most easily detected when driving a nice smooth 45 to maybe 55mph, then gently accelerating. If you feel a vibration that kind of feels like one of those grooved roads or like a steel grate bridge, then you probably have torque shudder and may need a rebuild.
Sometimes shudder can be fixed with a fluid and filter change. But if shudder continues, it leads to heat which cooks seals which causes debris which kills the tranny, eventually.
Note that 95 and newer E4OD supposedly had better TCs and other parts which decreased this problem. So you may not have torque shudder, but worth checking for anway.
