Code 542, front fuel tank stopped working

The other day when I was leaving work my truck wouldn't start on the front tank. I switched to the rear tank and it fired right up, however shutting down when I switched to the front. I pulled code 542, and I had my friend bang on the front tank with a mallet which got it to run after a few taps. Does this confirm that my front fuel pump is indeed bad, or could it be something else? I'd prefer to find out before I just start throwing parts at it.

Your pump is most likely bad, it's a very common thing. You can check for bad connection at the pump, but most likely it is bad.

Fuel pumps tend to stop working t because the electric motor brushes wear out. Having two pumps changes things up a bit, but I have found pumps start to fail when they get around 150k miles. I usually replace mine around that time, in my shop, vs on the side of the road.
