2007 FX4, suddenly today noticed a crack in the windshield coming up from the bottom edge under the cowl and extending about 3" upwards of the black, but it's in line with the right side wiper pivot. Wife just noticed it on the way to town as the sun lit it up. It's at such angle in the glass that me, the diver is looking at it's edge, and it's almost impossible to see. Nothing hit it, must be just a stress crack due to morning sun after cool night? It'll pass inspection being just the one crack.
I'll maybe use a kit to vacuum the crack and inject the stuff ... maybe it'll stop it growing or getting moisture in it. It's really tight, can't feel it with fingernail on either inside or out.
It's not like I can see it from the driver side, I can't. If I get a windshield put in, it'll be on my dime. I thought was odd seeing as it's never been out of the truck, but my '77's windshield has been out 4 times that I know of since 1986, and is still OEM.
I had a '98 Crown Vic police car do it, and back in 1972 we took a trip to western Texas and when we got home, my parked Swinger had such a crack, but both those were way longer cracks.
I had a similar crack appear on my '15 I bought. I bought the truck in July and in November the first time I had frost on the windshield I put on the defroster and a crack appeared coming up from under the cowl. The Ford dealer claimed it was from an impact, but the tech who replaced it at a private shop said there was no impact and it was either a defect or damage done when installed at the factory. Luckily in my state windshields are covered 100% by insurance.

Cars crash all the time, and the windshields don't break.
Most of those stress cracks are from temperature variance..... which is not supposed to happen...... only I've never heard of a windshield being replaced under warranty for defective glass. But the only way for glass to develop a crack from temperature change is that the glass is defective.
Could an object strike create a single line fracture? Anything is possible. Usually, when an object strikes, you get a spider web effect.
Well, was a cool night here, then the other day it warmed up pretty quick, in the sun. It was not from an impact. Truck is a few years aged, but it has a dedicated place in a carport at home, so it sees little sun in that area.
I'm in the windshield business and can say windshields can and do develop what we call "stress cracks" all the time. It's entirely possible for a crack to develop without any signs or indication of an impact or other mechanical action. It almost never occurs due changing outdoor temperatures being the sole reason.
I happen to think back to the discovery, it was a day that I had laid a white towel over the dash facing the sun to ease the heat on my Garmin and XM. Maybe was just a fluke. It's been a few days now, and no spreading. I just figured was heat build up in the sun after a cool night.
