I want to drop my rear end probably 3 inches to level it with the front (don't want bigger tires so lifting the front would make it look dumb). if I remove the spacer blocks (4wd 9.75 axle) and put in a 1 inch drop shackle, would I likely have to shim the axle to fix the pinion angle? what if I only remove the blocks for a ~2" drop?
also, does anyone have an aftermarket source for the shorter bolts or a part number for the dealer? or even just spacers for the nuts so I don't actually have to replace the u bolts?
I dropped the rear 2" by just removing the blocks and using new shorter 9/16" square U-bolts from Stengle Bros, they came with matching deep well nuts and hard washers. You could use 2wd U-bolts ... it works fine.
Stengel Bros # 361-434 also work, they are 9/16-18 fine threaded and come with deep well nuts and hardened steel washer
I lowered the front as well, by about 2-1/2" ..... we love it. Front was more work, I did my own mods and alignment. Was 2011.
ordering a set of bolts now. i suppose your setup wouldnt have significant pinion misalignment as you dropped the front nearly same, so i guess ill just have to do it and see what happens. also ordered a 1-2" drop shackle anyway, i can always send it back if im satisfied with with the block drop alone.
finally put in the 2" drop shackles and also removed the blocks, aaaaand immediately it knocks at low speed. good thing i bought some shims in preparation, ill slap them in probably tomorrow and hopefully it will fix it. looks good though, basically perfectly level front to back, exactly what i wanted.
edit: so... yeah its completely fine now. took it for a spin, went fast went slow drove hard drove soft, nothing. zero noise. went under a double checked none of the u bolts loosened or broke, nope all good. so thats great i dont have to shim the axle now, but also now i have to figure out what the hell that noise was, if it even returns. oh well.
