I was looking at Falken Wildpeak A/T4Ws, thinking I wanted to go to a 275/70r18 (just slight upsize from the 275/65 I have now), but I pulled the full list of sizes just to see if there were any other options I should consider. Scanning through, I noticed that Falken lists both LT275/70 and LT265/70 as having the same width and diameter. Can that possibly be right? The local Discount Tire doesn't show either size as being available in store, so I can't get an easy comparison. I emailed Falken to inquire, and I'll report back. Just curious if anyone else had noticed this. For what it's worth, the LT265/70 is cheaper, so there is a little motivation to figure this out.
I'm going to say that's an error on their page. Here's a screen shot of a tire size calculator comparing the 2 sizes. Saying that, the calculator shows actual sizes based on actual numbers, while actual tires may differ. From everything I have seen, Falken is generally true to size. I ended up swapping my stock 275/70/18 GY Wranglers for a set of 295/70/18's WP AT4's and I love them. The stock tires were a 33" tire whereas the 295's are a 34.3 x 11.6 tire. The charge in size is noticeable, and looks much better IMO. They also drive and ride way better than the stock tires. These were $346 each from Simple Tire. Anyway, the 265's are a 32" tire while the 275's are a 33" tire, so it would make sense that the 265's are slightly less expensive.
It would be weird for two of the exact same tires, one in 265 and the other 275, to be the same width. Those numbers (265 and 275) are the width in millimeters. The next number is a percentage of that width, so both being 70, the wider tire should also have a taller diameter.
Just to be clear, I do understand tire sizing. Just wondering if there was anomaly here where these two tires in particular ended up with similar actual dimensions in spite of labeled size. Admittedly, it doesn't seem likely.
Got the response from Falken. The rep says dimensions are correct and confirms the differences listed in tread depth and load rating, but I can't guarantee that he's not just reading the same info that I referenced. Not sure what I'll do with that info...still might go to 295/70 or even just run an HT tire. I just know the Wildpeak is a popular tire and thought it worth sharing.
The information is correct, the 275 does have a 1/32nds higher starting tread depth and higher load support.
