94 f150 XL, 4.9/E4OD 110K. When i turn the key from run to start i get 1 click and then the power to everything goes out. This has been an intermittent problem, usually when i mess around with the negative battery wire power will come back on. Power is still coming back on, but, as soon as i try to turn key to start again 1 click and everything is dark again. I've been working on things as they come up and as i can afford. Just did spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor yesterday. drove around running errands for several hours. the misfire was gone and ran better then it ever has. This morning i was stuck. 5 times of trying just the one click. Been meaning to change battery cables, but not sure if that is where i should start? Also this is my daily driver, I'm stuck riding bike until I get truck back up.
Check all of your ground wires... Engine to frame. Cab to frame. Battery to engine / frame.
When it acts up look for heat smoke on your connections. If it's a high moisture day, perhaps some steam at a weak connection.
Take your jumper cable (just one cable). Hook it to the negative battery post and start touching the other end to different areas around your ignition switch / solenoid.
It's just a gremlin..
If you have a repair clamp on one or both cables (bet you do), get new cables.
There was some wiring question in another post.. The clamp on cables are junk, I use these and have no issues, I change the Allen bolt to a standard. Cable ends
I tried to get the click on video, it wont do it on command for some reason. So it started again and again when i was trying to look at it.
Spoiler
There is a new repair clamp on the positive wire, but when it shuts off unless i mess with the negative the power wont come back on. The wire insulation on the negative side is starting to look pretty rough but there is not anything it can possibly touch there. I've also noticed an amp light flashing under the instrument cluster. No change in the battery reading on the panel, no cooking battery smell. I'm gonna order some cable ends and try that first.
