So I have a 85 Ford motorhome with an 84 6.9 idi motorhome. First got it and it wouldn't run went through a few things and did some research and replaced the injector lines and orings and then my dad was hell bent on changing out the injector pump with a new one and since it's his whatever. So now it will start right up and run amazing thank goodness for a $500 buy. But here's the big thing it will not shut off with the key. I've heard about the shutdown solenoid which should be new on the new pump but heard people say it could be stuck. I have checked the power going to solenoid and it's there with key on and turns off with key. So I'm stumped I don't work on diesels so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Your injection pump needs 12V to run. I imagine this 12V is controlled by the ignition switch. I've also heard that the injection pump can cause a run-away condition if it's not setup right.
Where did you buy the new injection pump? How did you shut-off the engine when it continued to run?
well, that is your problem rite there. Pensicola diesel has a reputation of "rebuilding" injector pumps that out of the box are worse than pumps that have been sitting uncovered in junk yards for 30 years..... with water in the lines.
Wondering if I rewired something wrong when I put back together or missed something. I know I had to fix the wires that run across the top of motor to trans
Having to use a piece of wood to starve the engine of air makes me think your engine was "running-away." That's not good.
You can double check that 12V is present at the injection pump with the key in the RUN position. The same connector should NOT have 12V with the ignition OFF. If you do this test with a multimeter, I would say your injection pump was rebuilt incorrectly. A known issue with Pensacola Diesel parts as Tom mentioned.
I've done some browsing on our forum and Oil Burners. It's my understanding that there is an internal injection pump setting that if done incorrectly will result in a run-away condition. I bought an injection pump rebuild kit but have never broken down to rebuild the spare one I have. I'm too chicken.
Let us know what the jokers at Pensacola Diesel say if you give them a call for troubleshooting advice.
if you remove the electrical connections from the top of the injector pump and it does not shut off, there is a problem with the pump and it has to be returned.
if you put the cover of the pump on wrong the arm for fuel shutoff can go on the wrong side of the fuel shut off solenoid. that is what will cause full throttle run away.
