I do find it funny when I am actively steering the truck, and it tells me to put my hands on the wheel. Yes, it is annoying, but in a way it is flattering. It means that I'm actually doing a great job of keeping the truck centered in the lane, and smoothly enough that it doesn't sense the steering.
I do wish it didn't do it though.
Word of warning: If it goes long enough without sensing your steering input it will brake check you.
I haven't taken/haven't had the opportunity to test the next steps after that.

Perhaps it is different on the pickups (I don't have it on mine) but on my Explorer, it does not sense your hands on the wheel, it functions on movement of the wheel; no need for a death grip on the wheel. When it flashes the warning, I can just slightly move the steering wheel with one finger and it clears. Try it.

At first I was doing the same thing. I was getting the alert while holding the stupid steering wheel with a decent grip. Finally I realized that you have to put pressure on the wheel like you are turning it slightly to make it stop dinging at you. I just keep a hand on the wheel and every so often slightly turn it to keep it from going bonkers.
