I had my instrument cluster out to change some bubs and the instrument cluster voltage regulator. When all was put back together I am hearing some ticking and the speedometer needle bounces in the 20- 30MPH range. I have checked for any visible kinks in the cable casing and all looks fine. I suspect I have disturbed something at the top end and should likely clean and lubricate the cable. My question is, can I just pull the cable out of the casing from the cab end to do this . Is it likely it will align and insert properly into the gears and the transmission by spinning it by hand when I re-insert it.
I have read that you can disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission and from the instrument cluster and pull the cable out of the sheath to lubricate it, then reinstall the cable into the sheath. I have used graphite on mine, but I have seen it suggested to use Lubriplate 105 on it, they said it was "thick enough to stay on the core, but thin enough that it won't cause the cable to bind". Maybe some else will pop in on this.
I was actually able to pull the cable out of the sheath by disconnecting it at the speedometer and pulling it carefully into the cab. I laid a drop sheet down expecting a greasy grimy mess, which there was. I cleaned it well with brake cleaner and let it dry. I then lubricated it and reinserted it slowly and it found its way "back home" and into the gear at the transmission. I was prepared to remove the cable from the transmission if necessary, but didn't have to. The ticking sound has gone, and there is a very slight waver in the mid 20MPH area, but disappears by 30MPH. For now, I'll call it a win. I lubricated mine with vaseline based on some old school advice - we'll see how that works out.
