leaving work tonight in my 79, i start going and i here a noise and it gets louder the faster i went. i know it,s the cable. is there a way to lube the cable? and i can,t get it off the back of the cluster, how do i remove it from the cluster? thanks mudder trucker.
There are just a few screws holding the cluster on. Pull them and it pops out. Squeeze the cable end and it will release from the back of the speedo (some release with a hairpin clip). It is obvious when you get the cluster out a ways. Buy some speedo cable lube from the parts store and run some down into the cable. This may help, if not you will need to remove the entire cable and pull the core out to clean and lube it. If it is too badly worn you may need to replace it.
It is common in cold weather to get that speedo "squall".
This thread will help you correctly unhook the cable from the speedo.
I hope the lubing works for you, it seems to work for everyone but me. I've gotten to where I just automatically replace the entire cable and housing (about $25) and the problem is cured for a long long time...
to get the cable off in simple language: just squeeze the whitish plastic part as close to the back of the speedo as you can, and pull the cable. I know what you're saying about not wanting to break anything; the first cluster I pulled at the junkyard, I couldn't tell if that was the right way to get the cable off, so I cut it.....
Once you have the speedo housing disconnected, you can pull the cable out, lube it, and slide it back in, giving it a turn or two when it's almost all the way back in to line up the drive sleeve and unless the cable has some broken strands or there's lots of rust, you should be good for quite a while. My 79 F20 has been working fine for over two years and it used to "jump" like crazy. If there's rust, you can disconnect the tranny end and shoot some penetrating oil in the upper end to try to clean it up. Also, not to worry if you break the plastic thing behind the cluster. It'll stay in just fine without it (at least mine has, 'cause that's just what I did, dang it!)
