I have a 1993 E 150 conversion van with a 351/4spd auto with O.D. It has always ran great until recently....now it loads up during around town driving and is running way too rich. I suspected a oxygen sensor/catylitic problem. The air bag light is flashing a code 51 when the check engine light comes on. According to Ford...the problem is in the coolant temp sensor or the air change temp sensor. I am tired of spending money to replace what the reps think might be the problem everytime it gets hooked to the computer. Any ideas????? The gas is killing me money wise. I am getting approximately 4miles to the gallon now. It used to get 10 around town.
Replace the O2 sensor then replace the Air Charge AND the Coolant Temp sensor that is located in the tree beside the throttle body. after that it be pretty good. Also when did you last do a good tune up?
I tuned it up this past summer (2003). Everything was fine until a few months ago. Are you telling me to replace all three sensors at the same time or replace them one at a time, clear the computer and then see what happens before I replace the next one on the list??????
I am saying to start at the o2 sensor as it's the most likely culprit. It will make the computer run in "full rich" mode. I would take it to the local parts store and have them pull the codes, they'll do it for free.
I bought a cheapo code tool at the parts store. Works slick.
(my connector was behind the battery, not near the r fender as book says).
I recently had a engine fire and had to replace coil, 4 injectors, splice in wiring on Left bank, replace 3 vacuum solenoids and Vacuum hoses, Distributor cap and wires.
(Squirrell fire, piled up leaves on top of motor and they lit on fire.)
This motor ran before I started replacing things after fire. After I "fixed" everything it wouldn't start. After checking everything I pulled out the codes with code tool. (I had a big list). But after that the motor started right up!!! Maybe pulling codes resets things? I don't know but I'm glad I have the tool.
Yeah, the code scanners reset the computer, which in turn clears the codes so new ones can build up. If there is one that is a "fatal" error it won't let the engine run.
