I just picked up a 1964 (I think) F100 for a friend. I have figured out most of the Vin / warranty tag info but want to be sure on the year and I haven't found what engine size, code A. It's a straight 6.
Here is the tag.
F10AR750399
WB 115, Color M, Model F100, Body 281, Trans C, Axle 09, Max GVW 5000, 129hp @4000, DSO 75
At first I would have guessed an 'A' engine code in a 1964 F-Series Ford truck would indicate it to be a 223 straight 6 ( I6 ); but, the HP and RPM don't match up. A typical 223 was rated at 114HP @ 3600 RPM. Now a 240" I6 was rated 129HP @ 4000 RPM.....but I'm fairly certain 240s were not installed in 1964..they started in 1965.

Which side of the engine is the carburetor on ?

Why would I ask this question?
Because its a quick way to tell the two engines apart.
The 223 has its intake/exhaust manifolds on the L side (and the carb) and the 240 has its manifolds (& the carb) on the R side of the engine.
