I have 48 8BA flathead 6v , I press the starter button and noting, I have a push button solenoid, so I try it and it starts, then the next time i go out to crank it noting at starter switch or solenoid . Purchased a new solenoid no dice, thinking it maybe the coil ? Did check to see if engine is locked up, it turned over fine. Any help appreciated. f1butcher
The push button on the dash is a ground, it only has one wire, and it goes to the solenoid, make sure that wire is clean at the dash button, and the dash button is making a good ground to the dash. Might check the small ground cable from the engine to the fire wall too.
It is probably just a dirty or poor connection somewhere in the starter circuit. I would start with cleaning each connection and placing a small amount of dielectric grease on the bare metal parts before reassembly. I would also check the condition of the battery. If you do not have the equipment to check it, most chain auto parts stores will check it for you for free.
If I am interpreting the series of events correctly it almost sounds like a loose ground connection from the battery cable to the engine block.
Speaking of battery cables and the starter cables, your cables are heavy 2/0 gauge aren't they? With no corrosion seen around the terminals? And you also have a good ground connection from your engine block to your cabs firewall sheet metal and your frame? Motor mounts and cab mounts have rubber isolotars in them so the cab and frame need a grounding connection back to your battery.
Just some ideas maybe....
There are 2 6v pos ground capable solenoids available. Parts stores might have given you either one? One triggers to ground, it takes a 1 wire button. One triggers to hot, it takes a 2 wire button. Ypu can figure out which solenoid you have by using a remote starter button and seeing which terminal triggers the solenoid. Box does not show which one you have. ( Ask me why I know, LOL. I have fought this problem for quite a while on my 48 and 53. They gave me the one for the 48 that was for the 53 and later gave me the 53 one for the 48. So each time I finally figured it out I had gone through at least 3 thinking they wer faulty.)
Thanks guys, I will clean all of the grounds and connections and see what happens. I will take the battery to parts store and see if it has enough cranking amps, may go ahead and charge for awhile tonight. Will let you know what happens. f1butcher
Ok it was the Battery the whole time, someone told me those 6 Volt Batteries don't let you know when they are running down , they just die , with no solenoid ticking ,etc. Anyway thanks for the help, f1butcher
