Brake Lights not correctly working
About 9 months ago i noticed that my brake lights would, as pushing on the pedal "turn on, turn off, then on at full pedal". They worked but not optimally so a few months ago when i finally got time to change it that's when all the trouble started. First swtich i bought was the $30 MotorCraft, always reach for that brand first, then after getting about 20 hrs into learning and trying this and that i ordered the cheapest Standard Ign $9 switch. No different. Just a different color. After 20 more hrs including me changing out the power booster, i got so frustrated i took it to the old time Ford guy and he said has to be the switch because they need to be hair triggered. He put on the more expensive AutoZone Duralast and that fixed the problem - barely touch the pedal = brake lights on and CC off not to return on.
However, the problem goes more in detail than what i first noticed. The lights come on as expected barely moving the pedal but at full pedal if you ease up on the presure the lights will go off and stay off even if your foot remains there. Until you add more presure the lights will stay off on the pedal travel all the way up. So you could be at the stop sign or light, brake lights were on but you moved up a 1/16" lights are off and people behind you may slam into you thinking you are going to move.Lots of people are changing out the spring, using shims, removing the "wear" part (nylon bushing) and getting a better result but still that's not the way it should be.
I think this Ford brake light switch engineering config may have been in use since about 1965-1996.on many different models of cars. (Now that i have studied it so much, it could also be by design so that lights go off immediatly when pedal travels upward, but no other car does that!) The part # has changed about 12 times or more...some switches are essentially the same other than the plug is on the back or the side. Yes there are different switches for power booster systems versus manual brakes but i know i have the correct switch including the orignal day 1 switch. I'm about to change the master cyclinder but that is 4yrs old and only about 4k miles on it with no problems.
Any one....have ....any ....more ideas before i take it to some one else?
Well i guess it is by design....my friend just checked his 2 old bronco's and his bronco II and that's they way the brake lights are working, which makes sense for the switch design.
Thanks
