Found the problem as I did not set the points correctly. Set them at .025 and no issues WRT backfire or missing.
New cap is numbered so I followed those positions when replacing the plug wires.

FYi- take a q-tip and apply a small amount of teflon lube to the distributor shaft cam- where the cam rotates and open/closes the points..... they use to include a little tube of this but stopped amny moons ago....it does 2 things 1) helps the points open/close smoothly and 2) Most importantly it reduces/eliminates the rub block on the points from wearing so the points stay in adjustment much, much longer!
