4r7ow loss of 4th gear

I have a 2007 f150 that dropped out of 4th and into neutral. I turned overdrive on and limped home with no issues except for the higher revs. I took the valve body out and found a couple pistons that were being held up by a check ball that fell apart. the overdrive servo was intact and in place and the overdrive band seems to be intact. after i refilled the transmission I took it out and had it kick out of 3rd instead and again if i turn off the overdrive it drives fine. dont want to do a rebuild if there is something else that I am missing. the fluid looked good didnt have splinters or burned smell. anyone have any useful advice for me?

people keep talking about broken snap rings and a busted foreward clutch but i need to know if this problem can be caused by a bad shift solenoid as it is the last thing I can try before pulling the transmission.

There are two shift solenoids. If solenoid 1 was bad you wouldn't have first gear and fourth gear. If solenoid 2 was bad you wouldn't have third and fourth gear. I can't see how this could be a bad solenoid.

thanks I am pretty sure its either the overdrive band thats burned or that drum on the foreward clutch. I tried to downshift from 60km/hr and get very little if any engine braking does anyone know if that would indicate one or the other? I heard that if the overdrive band is broken you wont get engine braking. not much more i can do but have a mull before deciding to remove the transmission. just trying to understand exactly what could be wrong as i hate admitting defeat.

This doesn't sound like a minor issue to me. It probably needs to come out.

You might want to try starting a new thread over in the "Clutch, Transmission, Differential, Axle & Transfer Case" forum.

Welcome aboard!

A straight bolt in? Nothing else. Extensive modifications? Whatever you like.
